We focus on what is good fair and clean
We are non profit team
Slow Food Toronto (SFT) is the Toronto, Ontario, Canada convivum of Slow Food, an international non-profit organization that was founded in 1989 in Piedmont, Italy. Slow Food aims to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. Slow Food Toronto supports and embodies the mission of Slow Food and seeks to work with other Ontario and Canadian Slow Food conviva.
Since its beginning, Slow Food has grown into a global movement involving millions of people in over 160 countries working to ensure that everyone has access to good, clean and fair food. Slow Food Toronto was co-founded by Chef Jamie Kennedy and Pamela Cuthbert in February 2003 with an official launch dinner at Jamie Kennedy’s JK ROM restaurant.
Slow Food believes food is tied to many other aspects of life, including culture, politics, agriculture and the environment. Through our food choices we can collectively influence how food is cultivated, produced and distributed, and as a result bring about great change.
Slow Food Toronto is comprised of a steering committee and members who live in and around Toronto. Slow Food Toronto is entirely organized by a group volunteers that supports the mission of Slow Food and Slow Food Canada. The volunteers provide diverse talent, expertise and ambition to organize events and represent Slow Food in Toronto. In addition, Slow Food Toronto regularly engages with individuals, culinary businesses and producers that contribute to a good, clean and fair food system.
Born and nurtured under the sign of Industrialization, this century first invented the machine and then modelled its lifestyle after it. Speed became our shackles. We fell prey to the same virus: ‘the fast life’ that fractures our customs and assails us even in our own homes, forcing us to ingest “fast- food”. Homo sapiens must regain wisdom and liberate itself from the ‘velocity’ that is propelling it on the road to extinction. Let us defend ourselves against the universal madness of ‘the fast life’ with tranquil material pleasure.
Slow Food assures us of a better quality lifestyle. With a snail purposely chosen as its patron and symbol, it is an idea and a way of life that needs much sure but steady support.
